Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Resident of Richmond Crescent, Epsom,

I have received a request for information about a NHW group in your area from a resident wishing to join an existing road Watch. Unfortunately there is not an existing road Watch in your area although I see that there are seven members registered on the NHW website who are residents of Richmond Crescent. I am therefore sending this email to all those members to ask if someone is willing to become the Neighborhood Watch road coordinator for Richmond Crescent. I have helped many residents in Epsom and Ewell to set up their own road Watch and am able to supply the necessary road signs, window stickers and home and personal security literature for distribution to those residents interested in becoming a member of such a group.

It is not necessary for all the members of the road Watch to be registered on the Neighbourhood Alert system in order to join the Watch but they should be resident in the defined area, ie. Richmond Crescent. The members of the Watch should communicate with each other via emails, or by an online closed Facebook group or WhatsApp group by mobile phone. For anyone without internet or mobile phone access it would be necessary for the coordinator to distribute printed copies of Alerts and to receive reports of suspicious incidents and criminal activity in the area by hard copies or notes.

In some areas we have set up larger groups which we call Cover Groups covering an area such as a Ward. These are in some cases run by a NHW coordinator within the local Residents Association who is appointed onto their committee to report at monthly meetings and post Alerts to a closed Facebook group for their Ward. These have been operating for several years now in Cuddington and Stoneleigh and Auriol Wards, with some 400 and 2000 members respectively. If you are a member of your local RA it may be worth raising this suggestion as a possibility with your committee Chairman at a future meeting.

If you or someone else in your road is willing to become the NHW road coordinator please let me know and I will provide all the necessary help and support to set up your road Watch.
